About Ujima

Founded in 1985, Ujima (pronounced OO-JEE-MAH) is Dartmouth’s oldest dance organization. The term “Ujima” is the third of the seven Kwanzaa principles, meaning “collective work and responsibility.” As a student-run group, we take pride in our name as a core value that distinguishes our work, performance, and group dynamic.

Though Ujima’s beginning had modern dance, jazz, African dance, ballet, and hip-hop sentiments, it is now primarily a hip-hop dance group. The group is made up of dancers from different dancing, cultural, geographical backgrounds and perspectives, but have found commonality through dance. As a family, Ujima is committed to utilizing the passions for dance within team members to inspire and to transcend boundaries within diverse communities.
